Tear-offs, sized by the square

Roofing Dumpster Rental in Kansas City

Shingles are one of the heaviest things you can put in a dumpster, so sizing a roofing container by space alone is how people end up with a surprise bill. Dump It KC, which offers roll off containers in Kansas City, sizes your container by roof squares and layers, and parks it right under the eave so crews can drop debris straight in.

What Size Dumpster for a Roof Tear-Off?

A 15 yard handles a one layer tear-off on a typical Kansas City home of 20 to 25 squares. A 20 yard fits larger roofs or two layers. Because shingles run about 250 pounds per square, weight usually fills the allowance before the container is full.

Do the math first

Roof Squares to Shingle Weight

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof. Standard 3 tab asphalt shingles weigh about 250 pounds per square per layer; heavier architectural shingles weigh more. Felt, nails and drip edge add a little on top.

Roof Tear-Off Calculator

Enter your roof in squares or square feet, the number of layers and the shingle type. It shows the weight, the size and the estimated total.

Your included weight is 1.5 tons in a 15 yard and 2 tons in a 20 yard. Shingles over the allowance are billed at the heavy material rate of $0.10 per pound, so compare the overage to the next size up before you book.

Tear-off day

Placing a Roofing Dumpster for a Clean Tear-Off

  1. Park it under the eave

The closer the container is to the roof edge, the more debris goes straight in from the roof. The driveway side of the house is usually the best choice.

  2. Protect the landscaping

Lay tarps over beds and shrubs between the dumpster and the wall to catch shingles that miss.

  3. Spread the load

Toss shingles evenly across the container instead of piling them against one wall, and keep everything below the top edge.

  4. Sweep for nails

Run a magnetic sweeper over the drive and the yard after tear-off. A tire punctured on site is a $100 fee, and a nail in your own tire is worse.

Once the insurance claim is approved and the roofer sets a date, book the dumpster for the same morning.

We had a basement remodel project that would need a dumpster to complete. My sister researched online and sent me a couple of options. Roofing Dumpster FAQ

What size dumpster do I need for a roof replacement?

A 15 yard handles a one layer tear-off of about 20 squares, which covers most Kansas City homes. Choose a 20 yard for larger roofs or two layers.

How much do shingles weigh per square?

Standard 3 tab asphalt shingles weigh about 250 pounds per square per layer. Architectural shingles are heavier. A 20 square roof is roughly 5,000 pounds of shingles.

How much does a roofing dumpster cost in Kansas City?

A 15 yard is $325 and a 20 yard is $350 for 3 days with 1.5 tons to 2 tons included. Shingles over the allowance are billed at $0.10 per pound.

Can I put two layers of shingles in one dumpster?

Often, yes, in a 20 yard on an average size roof. Two layers doubles the weight, so check the squares against the included weight or call and we will help you size it.

Can the dumpster be placed close to the house for roofing?

Yes. We place it as close to the eave as the truck can safely reach on the driveway, so crews can drop shingles straight in.

Does a homeowner or the roofer rent the dumpster?

Either one. Put the roofer's contact in the order notes if they will be on site when we deliver.
