I wish I had a few pictures! Rodney was awesome to work with; responsive, informative and extremely timely! That dumpster arrived as promised and was picked up promptly later the same day! An exceptional local business I gladly support!
Recycling and donations
Where Your Junk Goes: Recycling and Donations in Kansas City
We aim to donate or recycle 65 to 85% of all items we collect. When we haul a load, usable things go to Kansas City charities first, recyclables go to recyclers, and only what cannot be saved goes to disposal. Below is how we sort, and the local charities that take what you are giving away.
Written by the Dump It KC crew behind our dumpster rentals in KC, from each organization's own donation page.

Our process
How Our Responsible Process Works
We sort every Kansas City junk removal job with the goal of maximizing donations and recycling. A rented dumpster is different: it is mixed debris, so pull what you want to give away before it goes in.
-
On-Site Sorting
Our team carefully sorts items at your location, identifying what can be donated or recycled before anything is loaded as trash.
-
Donation Priority
Furniture, clothing, appliances and household goods in good condition are delivered to local charities.
-
Responsible Recycling
Electronics, metals, plastics, paper and other materials go to certified recycling centers. Paint, chemicals, batteries, tires and refrigerant appliances are kept apart under our restricted item rules.
-
Impact Tracking
We track what gets donated and recycled so we can keep improving our diversion rate.
-
Community Support
Your items help local families, shelters and nonprofits throughout the Kansas City area.
-
Landfill Reduction
Only items that cannot be saved are taken to a licensed transfer station or landfill, as a last resort.

What Most Kansas City Donation Centers Turn Down
Several organizations in the directory list these as items they will not take. Here is who says no, and where each item can go instead.
-
Mattresses and box springs
Turned down by: City Thrift (City Union Mission), Catholic Charities TurnStyles Thrift, Operation Breakthrough, Community LINC

-
Cribs, car seats and strollers
Turned down by: City Thrift (City Union Mission), Catholic Charities TurnStyles Thrift, Operation Breakthrough
Instead: Buy them new for the next child. The old ones can go in a junk removal load or a dumpster.

Instead: TurnStyles takes working TVs up to 5 years old. Older sets are restricted items with their own fee: Kansas City dumpster fees for TVs and electronics.
-
Stained, torn or pet damaged furniture
Turned down by: Community LINC, City Thrift (City Union Mission), Blessings Abound, Catholic Charities TurnStyles Thrift
Instead: If it would not sell in a store, it will not be accepted. It goes in the trash load.

Before pickup day
How to Get Donations Ready
Make a give pile first
Set donations apart before the dumpster arrives or the crew shows up. Once something is under a load of drywall, it is trash.
Check it like a buyer would
Clean, working and free of stains, rips, odors and pet hair. Most of the refusals above come down to condition.
Bag and box the small things
Loose housewares, clothing and books travel and sell better packed. Blessings Abound asks for it.
Tell us what is for donation
On a junk removal job, point out the give pile or text us photos, and we keep it apart from the trash load.
Keep hazards out of both piles
Paint, chemicals, batteries and tanks cannot be donated or dumped. Check restricted dumpster items and their fees before you load.

We had a basement remodel project that would need a dumpster to complete. My sister researched online and sent me a couple of options. Dump it KC has an excellent website with positive reviews and the prices and time frame matched our needs. When I booked an 11 yard dumpster, it was initially going to arrive around noon on the next day but much to my surprise, Rodney delivered our rental earlier than expected! Right on time! He explained the whole process to us and answered all our questions! Check off another project completed!

Questions
Recycling and Donation Questions
Does Dump It KC donate what it picks up?
Yes. On a junk removal job we sort the load and send usable furniture, appliances, clothing and household goods to Kansas City charities before anything goes to disposal. Our goal is 65 to 85 percent of what we collect donated or recycled; right now it is 68 percent.
Where can I donate furniture in Kansas City?
Habitat for Humanity KC ReStore, Flourish Furniture Bank, Community LINC, City Thrift, TurnStyles and Blessings Abound all take furniture in good condition. Habitat ReStore, City Thrift and Blessings Abound also offer pickup.
Who picks up donations for free in Kansas City?
Habitat for Humanity KC ReStore picks up items too big to drop off, City Thrift and Big Brothers Big Sisters schedule pickups, the Salvation Army books pickups online or at 1-800-SA-TRUCK, and Blessings Abound does large estate pickups.
Where can I donate a mattress in Kansas City?
Most thrift stores do not take used mattresses. Community LINC accepts new or like new queen and twin mattresses and box springs. A worn mattress can go in a junk removal load or a dumpster.
Do items in a rented dumpster get recycled?
A dumpster load is mixed debris and goes to a licensed transfer station, so anything you want donated or recycled should come out before it goes in. Pull donations first, then load the rest.
What cannot be donated or thrown in a dumpster?
Paint, oils, automotive and household chemicals, batteries and propane tanks need special handling. Tires, TVs, electronics and appliances with refrigerant are restricted items with their own fees, listed on our restricted items page.
