Bulky Item Pickup in Kansas City: Free Large Trash Pickup by City (2026)

  • Waste Removal
  • Updated October 29, 2026
Old couch, wrapped mattress and a dresser set neatly at the curb of a Kansas City brick bungalow, waiting for bulky item pickup

A worn-out couch, an old box spring, a dresser with a broken drawer: sooner or later every household has something too big for the trash cart. Whether it can go to the curb for free depends on which side of a city line you live on. Kansas City, Missouri sends a city truck by appointment. Overland Park leaves it to your hauler once a year. Raytown sells coupons, Riverside sells tags, Independence makes its haulers offer one a year, and in Blue Springs it is between you and the company you pay. As a locally owned dumpster rental in KC, we hear that confusion every week, so we read the rules for all 52 cities we serve and put them in one place.

Each city below has the type of program, the item limit, the cost, the number to call and a link to the page we read it from, checked October 28 and 29, 2026. Haulers and contracts change, and several towns are switching companies over the next year, so confirm before you drag a sofa down the driveway.

Five Ways Bulky Pickup Works Around Kansas City

Every program in the metro fits one of these patterns. Knowing which one you have tells you whether to book, wait or call someone.

  • Free pickup you book. You request a date, the truck comes. Kansas City, MO, Liberty, Lansing and Excelsior Springs work this way.
  • Monthly bulky day. One to five items go out on a set day each month with no call. Common in northeast Johnson County, Cass County and towns served by GFL, Constable or Honey Creek.
  • Once or twice a year. A spring or fall week, or a single yearly pickup your hauler must provide. Overland Park, Independence, Lenexa, Shawnee, Kearney and Smithville fit here.
  • Paid pickup, tag or coupon. Olathe, Raytown, Riverside, Platte City and Bonner Springs charge for each pickup or item, and Grandview sells drop-off loads.
  • Up to your hauler or HOA. No city service at all. Blue Springs, Lee's Summit, Gladstone, Gardner, Leawood and smaller towns leave it to the company you hire.

Kansas City, Missouri: How to Book a Free Bulky Pickup

KCMO has the most generous program in the region. According to the city bulky item page, a free pickup is available Monday through Friday by appointment for single-family homes and buildings with six units or fewer. Businesses cannot use it.

  1. Book it. Use the Official Bulky Scheduler on the city site, or call 311 at (816) 513-1313.
  2. List what is going. Up to 15 items per appointment, each under 500 pounds. Tell them about any refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner, because a separate truck handles refrigerants.
  3. Set it out on time. Items go within 3 feet of the curb by 7 a.m. on your date, and not before 3 p.m. the day before.
  4. Cancel if plans change. Call (816) 513-2855 (513-BULK) or use the app.

Furniture, mattresses, TVs, cabinets, water heaters, furnaces and most appliances qualify. The city will not take loose piles, bags or boxes of small stuff, lumber and loose building materials, closed drums or fuel tanks, yard waste or tires. If your pile is mostly small items in bags, it is a cleanout, not a bulky pickup; our basement cleanout tips walk through how to sort it.

Bulky Pickup Changes Coming in 2026 and 2027

Several cities are moving to single-hauler contracts, and each switch changes the bulky rules.

  • Lee's Summit, November 3, 2026: the ballot question on citywide trash service. A yes vote would bring quarterly bulky collection, with service changes landing between mid-2027 and mid-2028.
  • Merriam, November 1, 2026: GFL becomes the only hauler, with a monthly bulky day of up to three items and $60 per white good. Residents were told to cancel their own trash contracts by October.
  • Edwardsville, November 7, 2026: the next curbside bulky Saturday.
  • Mission, November 23 to 28 and December 21 to 26, 2026: the last two monthly bulky weeks of the year.
  • Prairie Village, January 1, 2027: GFL replaces Republic and the one-small-item rule becomes up to three bulk items a month.
  • Kansas City, Kansas: the UG's cart pilot is expanding, and KSHB reports that the current WM contract runs to 2032.

What Almost No City Bulky Pickup Takes

The lists vary, but the same handful of items get left at the curb across the metro. Here is where they go instead.

How to Set Items Out So They Actually Get Taken

  • Go by the city clock. Most programs want items out by 7 a.m., and several fine you for setting them out days early. Eudora adds $50 if items sit more than 24 hours.
  • Wrap mattresses. Liberty requires a mattress in a plastic bag sealed with packing tape.
  • Cut and roll carpet. Four-foot rolls, tied, under about 40 to 50 pounds, is the common rule in Johnson County and Kearney.
  • Keep it at the curb, not in the street. Leave room for the truck arm, away from mailboxes, cars and low wires.
  • Separate the refrigerant appliance. Tape the doors shut and keep it apart from the rest so it is not skipped with the whole pile.
  • Stay within the count. A pile over the limit is often left entirely, not trimmed down.

A solid dresser or a clean sofa does not need to be crushed in a packer truck. Charity thrift stores and furniture banks around Kansas City accept usable pieces, and some offer pickup. Our recycling and donation page shows where the loads our crews collect end up. If you are getting ready for a move, the decluttering checklist for a Kansas City move builds in time to list things for sale before the curb becomes the only option.

When the Curb Is Not Enough: How Dump It KC Can Help

City bulky programs are a good deal for one couch. They fall short when the item cap is three pieces and you have a full basement, when your next date is next spring, when the dresser is on the second floor, or when the pile includes remodel debris no city truck will touch. That is where we come in, with two ways to handle it.

Have Us Haul It Out

Our junk removal service in Kansas City sends a crew to lift the sectional out of the basement, the treadmill out of the spare room and the old washer out of the laundry, then sorts what can be donated or recycled. You can get a price without a visit through the online trash removal quote.

Rent a Dumpster for the Whole Job

When the furniture is only part of the load, a container lets you clear everything at once. Our bulk item disposal dumpster page covers sizing for furniture and mattresses, and a 10 yard dumpster fits most single-room cleanouts. If you do not want a container sitting in the driveway at all, live load dumpster service means the driver waits while you fill it and leaves with it the same visit. For a garage, the one-weekend garage cleanout plan shows how to stage it.

The same items cities refuse need care in a dumpster too. Refrigerators, freezers, tires and electronics with batteries must be disclosed and may carry a fee, so check our restricted dumpster items and fees before you load them. Not sure which option is cheaper for your pile? We compared them in dumpster rental vs junk removal in Kansas City.

Book online with the city's Bulky Scheduler or call 311 at (816) 513-1313. Pickup is free Monday through Friday by appointment for single-family homes and buildings with six or fewer units, up to 15 items under 500 pounds. Cancel at (816) 513-2855.

Is bulky item pickup free in Kansas City?

In Kansas City, MO, yes, for eligible homes. In the suburbs it depends on the city. Many Johnson County and Cass County towns include a monthly bulky day in the trash bill, Overland Park, Lenexa and Shawnee haulers owe one free pickup a year, and Olathe, Raytown, Riverside and Platte City charge per pickup, tag or coupon.

Does Kansas City, Kansas have bulky item pickup?

Yes. WM collects trash under the Unified Government contract. Small bulky pieces can go out with trash, but larger items like a washer, dryer or mattress should be scheduled with WM first. The UG also holds dumpster days twice a year. Call UG 311 at (913) 573-5311 with questions.

How do I get rid of a mattress in Kansas City?

Kansas City, MO residents can include it in a free bulky appointment. In the suburbs, set it out on your monthly bulky day or book your hauler's yearly pickup, and wrap it in plastic, which Liberty requires. Junk removal or a dumpster works when you have more than the city limit.

Will the city pick up a refrigerator?

Sometimes. Kansas City, MO takes refrigerators on a separate truck if you tell them when booking. Many suburban programs refuse appliances with refrigerant, or charge extra, such as $60 per white good in Fairway and the new Merriam contract. Ask your city or hauler first.

What day is bulky pickup in Overland Park?

Overland Park has no city bulky day. Since 2022 every trash hauler must give its customers at least one curbside bulky pickup a year, and you set the date directly with your hauler. HOA contracts may differ.
