Broken concrete does not fit in a trash cart, and at close to two tons per cubic yard it gets expensive fast anywhere that charges by weight. The good news is that the Kansas City metro has plenty of yards that want it. We checked every operator website and the Kansas and Missouri state permit records, and found 18 sites that take it. If you would rather skip the trips altogether, our low cost dumpster rental in Kansas City covers heavy loads too, but the sites below are the do-it-yourself route.

Everything here was read from each operator's own pages or state records on October 29, 2026. Prices and hours change, so call before you load the truck, and confirm that the yard takes loads from the public.

The Short Answer

  • Cheapest posted price: the Lee's Summit Resource Recovery Park takes clean concrete for $10 per pickup load and $40 per trailer load, according to its concrete price sheet dated April 10, 2026. The catch: no rebar and no dirt.
  • Most locations: Metropolitan Concrete Recycle (MCR) runs five metro yards and also lists the Lee's Summit park address as one of its sites, so most of the Missouri side is a short drive from one.
  • Concrete with rebar in it: MCR accepts it and pulls the steel out with a magnet during crushing. Raptor takes it if the rebar is cut flush with the concrete.
  • Concrete mixed with lumber, drywall or trash: a recycler will turn it away. Take it to a debris landfill (sites 10 to 15) or a transfer station (sites 16 to 18).
  • Saturday: the Lee's Summit park, Johnson County Landfill, Raptor Grandview, Leavenworth County and Pink Hill Acres (summer only) are open Saturday. MCR yards work Saturday by appointment.

Numbers match the site list below. Green: concrete recyclers. Brown: landfills. Blue: transfer stations.

Concrete Recyclers (Sites 1 to 9)

A recycler crushes your concrete into new base rock and sells it back to contractors, so it wants clean rubble and charges little to take it. These are the best choice when your load is only concrete, brick, block or asphalt.

MCR posts one price list and one set of rules for its yards. Its dump and disposal page posts the rate as a cost per load or ton: $55 for a pickup, single axle or tandem truck, $65 for a tri-axle dump truck and $75 for an end dump trailer. Its FAQ lists weekday hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday by appointment and closed Sunday. MCR accepts clean concrete plus brick, granite, tile and asphalt, and its concrete services page says it also takes rock and dirt, including mixed loads of concrete, asphalt, rock and dirt. Wood, glass, plastic and hazardous waste must stay out, and you are asked to tell staff what you have when you arrive. The main line is (816) 551-5001.

1. MCR Kansas City, Atlantic Street

The closest MCR yard to downtown and North Kansas City, just north of the river.

2. MCR Independence, Industrial Drive

Riverbend Industrial Park. Handy for northeast Independence, Sugar Creek and Liberty.

3. MCR Independence, US-40

Serves east Independence and Blue Springs along the 40 Highway corridor.

4. MCR Grain Valley

MCR's website lists Grain Valley as a location without a street address; business listings place the yard at 1101 S Seymour Rd. Call for directions before you go.

5. MCR Kansas City, Route 150

The south side option, near Belton, Grandview and Martin City.

6. Lee's Summit Resource Recovery Park

Open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. MCR lists this same address as one of its yards. The park's concrete page accepts concrete, asphalt, brick, cinder blocks and pavers, and refuses dirt, trash, yard waste and rebar. At $10 per pickup load and $40 per trailer load, it is the lowest posted concrete price in the metro.

7. Kaw Valley Companies, Gibbs Road

Open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. According to its concrete recycling page, the drop-off accepts only concrete, asphalt and dirt. Trees, trash, wood, plastic and glass are refused. Dump prices are not posted, so call for a quote.

8. Rockridge Quarry Recycling, Hickman Mills

Rockridge describes itself on its recycling page as a licensed recycler of asphalt and concrete with the city of Kansas City, Missouri. It also takes brick, block, rock and dirt, plus brush, wood chips and compost in separate piles. Hours and prices are not posted.

9. Rockridge Recycle Center, Riverside

The Riverside page lists Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., while the center's disposal page shows 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., so call to confirm. It takes asphalt and concrete from both commercial and residential customers. This is the main Northland and Platte County option.

At a recycler, slabs go into the crusher, the steel comes out on a magnet, and the rock is sold as road and driveway base.

Landfills That Take Concrete (Sites 10 to 15)

A construction and demolition (C&D) landfill buries debris instead of crushing it. It costs more than a recycler, but it takes concrete that is mixed with other building waste. Kansas law spells this out: the Kansas solid waste statute (K.S.A. 65-3402) lists bricks, concrete and other masonry as construction and demolition waste. The four Kansas debris landfills below (sites 11 to 14) hold active permits on the KDHE solid waste permit map. None of them posts prices, so call for the minimum charge. If a whole room, garage or shed is coming down along with the slab, a demolition debris dumpster keeps the mixed waste in one place instead of in several truck trips.

10. Pink Hill Acres, Blue Springs

Summer hours (April 1 to October 31) are Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to noon. Winter hours (November 1 to March 31) are Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Saturday. Its website lists concrete, rock, brick, asphalt and cinder block among its accepted materials, and it is open to the public. Payment by cash, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express or an approved account.

11. APAC Stanley East Landfill, Stilwell

Phone number from the Holliday Sand and Stone locations list. A permitted debris landfill in southern Johnson County. Hours are not posted.

12. Lone Elm Construction Debris Landfill, Olathe

The phone number is the one on its state permit record. Hours and public access are not posted, so call first.

13. Asphalt Sales Construction Debris Landfill, Olathe

Open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to the Asphalt Sales landfill page, which says it accepts only materials allowed by the state. Every load is inspected. No phone is posted for the landfill; the number shown is the company's main office.

14. Olathe Construction Debris Landfill

The phone number is the one on its state permit record. Next door to Asphalt Sales. Hours are not posted.

15. Johnson County Landfill, Shawnee

Open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The WM facility page lists construction and demolition debris and clean soil. It takes card or an account. This is a full landfill, so expect the highest price here; use it when your concrete is mixed with household trash or other material that no debris site will take.

Transfer Stations That Take Concrete (Sites 16 to 18)

A transfer station collects waste and trucks it to a landfill. Two of the three below charge pickups a flat price per load rather than by weight, which is a real bargain for something as heavy as concrete.

16. Raptor Recycle and Transfer, Grandview

Open Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to noon. Raptor's waste type list accepts concrete with rebar cut flush, and asks you to tell the scale operator. Its price list charges $55 for a pickup without high sides, $90 with high sides or a bed extension, and $69 per ton (one ton minimum) for a dump trailer. If you unload by hand, arrive at least an hour before closing.

17. Raptor Recycle and Transfer, Smithville

Open Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Saturday. Same rebar rule as Grandview. Prices run a little higher: $65 for a pickup, $100 with high sides, and $79 per ton for a dump trailer.

18. Leavenworth County Transfer Station, Lansing

Open Tuesday to Friday 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. The county rate sheet charges construction debris at $13 per 420 pounds, capped at $60 per ton. Every load must be tarped, or you pay a $10 tarp fee.

Just Outside the Metro

MCR's seventh yard is about an hour east at 312 Route 23, Knob Noster, MO. In Lawrence, ReClaim It at 1702 N 1360 Rd, Lawrence, KS ((785) 330-7322) takes concrete tear-out, asphalt tear-out, asphalt millings and topsoil, according to its services page. It refuses loads mixed with trash, building materials or lumber.

Price for One Pickup Load, Side by Side

These are the sites that post a price a pickup owner can use. Everything else on the list quotes by phone.

Leavenworth County (18)About $60 per ton by weight$13 per 420 lb, $60 per ton capCall

Notice the pattern. Flat per-load prices (Lee's Summit, MCR, Raptor pickups) cost the same whether the bed holds 800 pounds or 2,000. Weight-based prices (Leavenworth, Raptor trailers) climb with every slab. For concrete, a flat price almost always wins.

Rebar and Wire Mesh Rules

Most driveways, garage floors and newer patios have steel in them: either rebar or a welded wire mesh. That steel decides where you can go.

  • Leave it in: MCR's crushers run the rubble past a magnet that pulls the steel out, so MCR takes reinforced concrete as is.
  • Cut it flush: Raptor accepts rebar only when it is cut off even with the concrete face, so nothing sticks out. A reciprocating saw with a metal blade or an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel handles it.
  • No steel at all: the Lee's Summit concrete area refuses rebar, so its $10 price is only for plain slabs and pieces.
  • Everyone else: ask when you call, and mention the steel at the scale even where it is allowed.

The two states treat steel a little differently. Kansas defines clean rubble as concrete including its reinforcing steel. Missouri's DNR guide to construction and demolition waste says reinforced concrete can still count as clean fill, but exposed rebar has to be removed before it is used.

Why a Clean Load Costs Less

The cheapest sites on this list are recyclers, and recyclers only want material they can crush and sell. Once your concrete is mixed with other waste, it legally becomes something else. Kansas law says clean rubble that gets mixed with other construction and demolition waste during demolition or hauling is treated as construction and demolition waste. Missouri DNR says fill mixed with more than minimal wood, metal, shingles, drywall or other building debris is no longer clean fill.

In practice, that means one sheet of drywall or a few boards on top of a load of slabs can move you from a $10 or $55 recycler to a landfill that quotes by the ton. A few habits keep a load clean:

  • Break out the concrete first and haul it before the rest of the demo.
  • Keep forms, stakes, expansion joint strips and landscape fabric out of the pile.
  • Knock off as much dirt as you reasonably can if you are headed to Lee's Summit, which refuses dirt.
  • Keep asphalt and concrete in one load only where the site takes both, like MCR or Kaw Valley.
  • Tell the scale house or yard staff exactly what is in the bed before you dump.

If the rest of the tear-out is going in a container, look over the items that can't go in a dumpster before you start, so paint cans, fuel and batteries stay out of both loads.

How Much Your Concrete Weighs

Concrete made with gravel or stone weighs about 4,050 pounds per cubic yard, according to a material weight chart built from EPA and NTEA figures. That is the number that surprises people, and it is the one that matters for your truck.

A cubic yard spread 4 inches thick covers about 81 square feet, so a standard 4-inch slab weighs roughly 50 pounds per square foot. Some quick examples:

Approximate weight of 4-inch-thick concrete, at about 50 lb per square foot
SlabAreaWeight
Sidewalk, 4 by 10 ft40 sq ftAbout 2,000 lb
Small patio, 10 by 10 ft100 sq ftAbout 5,000 lb
Patio, 12 by 16 ft192 sq ftAbout 9,600 lb
One-car driveway, 10 by 40 ft400 sq ftAbout 20,000 lb

Before you load, check the payload rating on the sticker inside your driver door. Many pickups are rated for far less than a full bed of concrete, so a 10 by 10 patio can take two or three trips even though the pieces would fit in one. Thicker driveways (5 or 6 inches) add 25 to 50 percent to these numbers. Our side-by-side look at how much fits in a pickup compared with a dumpster runs the same math for mixed debris, and our concrete weight calculator does it for your slab.

Buying Recycled Concrete Rock Back

The same yards that take your concrete sell it back as crushed rock, often for less than quarry stone. It packs hard and works well under driveways, patios, sheds and parking pads.

  • Lee's Summit Resource Recovery Park: 1-inch and 6-inch recycled aggregate at $12.50 per ton, which the park says is equivalent to MoDOT Type 5 base, plus 5/8-inch fill material at $6.50 per ton.
  • MCR: its materials page lists base rock (AB-3), screened rock, dust and fines, topsoil and 1-inch clean rock, with delivery available.
  • Kaw Valley Companies: screenings, 3/4-inch clean rock, AB-3, 3-inch minus, 1 by 4 inch rock and asphalt millings.
  • Rockridge Recycle Center, Riverside: recycled concrete aggregate, landscape rock and compost.
  • Holliday Sand and Stone: sells recycled concrete at its Stanley West site, 10203 W 167th St, Stilwell, KS 66085.

If you are tearing out an old slab and pouring a new one, ask the recycler whether you can drop off the old concrete and pick up base rock on the same trip.

When the Trips Add Up

The math above is why a full driveway tear-out rarely goes in a pickup. Ten trips to a recycler at $55 each is $550 plus a lot of gas and lifting. For a job that size, a heavy debris container that you fill once makes more sense; our concrete, dirt and rock dumpster page explains how those loads work and what they can hold. For anything that is not concrete, like trash, furniture, brush or shingles, our map of Kansas City landfills and transfer stations lists every other disposal site in the metro with its hours and fees.

If the container has to sit on the driveway you are keeping, you can book a dumpster that won't crack your driveway, set on boards under the rails and pads under the wheels. Contractors breaking out slabs every week can open an account for contractor dumpster rental in Kansas City, which earns a monthly volume discount. We deliver to the same towns these yards serve, including Independence dumpster rental, Lee's Summit dumpster rental, Olathe dumpster rental, Grandview dumpster rental and Smithville dumpster rental.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is there anywhere to dump concrete for free in Kansas City?

No site in the metro posts free concrete disposal for the public. The lowest posted price is the Lee's Summit Resource Recovery Park at $10 per pickup load and $40 per trailer load, for clean concrete with no rebar or dirt.

Can I take concrete with rebar in it to a recycler?

Yes at MCR, which pulls the steel out with a magnet during crushing. Raptor Recycle and Transfer takes it if the rebar is cut flush. The Lee's Summit Resource Recovery Park does not accept rebar at all.

Can I mix concrete with dirt, brick or asphalt in one load?

MCR accepts mixed loads of concrete, asphalt, rock and dirt, and Kaw Valley takes concrete, asphalt and dirt. Lee's Summit takes brick and asphalt but refuses dirt. Once wood, drywall or trash is in the load, a recycler will turn it away and it has to go to a debris landfill or transfer station.

How much does a pickup load of broken concrete weigh?

Concrete weighs about 4,050 pounds per cubic yard, or roughly 50 pounds per square foot at 4 inches thick. A 10 by 10 foot patio is about 5,000 pounds, which is more than most pickups are rated to carry in one trip.

Where can I buy crushed concrete in Kansas City?

The Lee's Summit Resource Recovery Park sells recycled aggregate for $12.50 per ton and fill material for $6.50 per ton. MCR, Kaw Valley Companies, Rockridge Recycle Center in Riverside and Holliday Sand and Stone at Stanley West also sell crushed concrete or AB-3 base.
